## The space between places

A staircase is usually drawn as a connection: one floor to another, one level to the next. But the landing is a place in its own right. Light settles there. Someone pauses to finish a conversation. A plant leans towards a window.

Designing for those small pauses changes the brief. A wider tread, a view outside or somewhere to rest a bag can make an ordinary route feel considered. The useful question is not only how people move through a building, but where they might choose to stay.
